Since we desire the true happiness that is brought about by a calm mind, and such peace of mind arises only from having a compassionate attitude, we need to make a concerted effort to develop compassion. We must use all the events of our daily life to transform our thoughts and behavior. - Dalai Lama

Overview of the Book

Sophia and the Seven Goddesses: A Journey of Self-Acceptance by Ilene Satala and Beverley Danusis.  A short synopsis of the book is provided here.

Sophia and the Seven Goddesses: A Journey of Self-Acceptance is based on Greek mythology.   The reader will join the heroine, Sophie, a pre-teen girl, on a trip as she travels to Greece for the summer with her grandparents where they are working on an exciting archeological dig.  The outward journey to Greece and the excavating going on at the archeological site is reminiscent of the internal journey and uncovering that Sophie is doing inside of herself.  When Sophie leaves home, she feels uncomfortable with the shape and size of her body and the color of her skin.  She has a hard time seeing her beauty.

When she arrives in Greece, Sophie and her grandparents are taken to the Parthenon.  Their guide, Nikos, shares the story of the Parthenon and how it used to be the home of the Goddess Athena, a 38-foot high golden statue made with 2,500 pounds of gold.  Sophie experiences a connection with this place and has a vision in which she sees the statue of the Goddess Athena and it comes alive, looks her in the eye and nods to her.  Sophie knows that something special and important has just happened.  This is just the beginning of Sophie’s journey.

While Sophie’s grandparents are part of the archeological dig uncovering an ancient temple with statues of goddesses, Sophie and her new friend, Tena, are on an exciting adventure of their own.  Tena shares an ancient myth with Sophie about a goddess temple that contained an Oracle statue of the Goddess Sophia, believed to represent wisdom.  A band of warriors wanted to steal this statue.  In order to protect the statue, one of the high priestesses devised a plan to cut the statue into pieces and hide the parts in different places.  When the threat was over, the priestess could not find the pieces of the statue.  The Goddess Artemis appeared to her and told her the statue was safe and not to be concerned.  Artemis vowed to protect the statue until the right person came along to find the pieces and bring wisdom back into the world.

While Sophie’s grandparents are working with others at the archeological site uncovering the seven goddesses, Sophie and Tena’s journey leads them to find the hidden pieces of the Oracle statue of the Goddess Sophia.  The Goddess Sophia is the final statue needed to unify the power of the temple and return wisdom back into the world.

During the process of finding the different parts of the statue, Sophie and Tena learn how to listen to their own intuitive knowing, listen to their heart wisdom, and how to transform the feelings they have about the different parts of their bodies from criticism to appreciation and acceptance.  They learn about their innate attributes from each of the goddesses:  from Athena, Leadership; from Demeter, Generosity; from Persephone, Intuition; from Artemis, Independence; from Hestia, Centeredness; from Aphrodite, Creativity; from Hera, Friendship; and from Sophia, Wisdom.  More importantly, Sophie and Tena learn that they carry within themselves each of these attributes and are Born Goddesses.

As a girl reads and joins the adventure with Sophie and Tena, she will have the opportunity to realize that she, too, is bold, brilliant and beautiful; a Born Goddess. During the story a girl will be able to transform her feelings of criticism about her body and her lack of power to feelings of love and acceptance. By the end of the story she will be empowered and inspired to create a better world for herself and others.

Midwest Book Review

“This book is a must read for anyone who wants to inspire young girls and let them know that they are powerful. Beverley Danusis and Ilene Satala take us on a wonderful journey with Sophie, a 12 year-old girl who starts out shy and riddled with self-doubt. Like many tweens, Sophie looks at her developing body and compares herself to media images of women. The hatred of the imperfect face and body begin.

Sophie takes an archeological trip to Greece with her grandparents. She discovers the powerful Greek goddesses and the goddess inside of her. Through her friend Athena, she learns how to commune with nature and lead with her heart, rather than her fears. There is a wonderful parent guide and exercises that will help girls meet life's challenges with courage. You go, girls!”
